3,530 Participants Raise Record-Breaking 14.5 Million in second annual 200Km, two-day, Ride to Conquer Cancer

Princess Margaret Hospital kicks off Canada-wide program to conquer cancer

(Toronto, June 13, 2009) - Today, The Princess Margaret announced that 3,530 participants from across the world raised $14.5 million in The Ride to Conquer Cancer; the most money raised by a cycling fundraiser in Canadian history. The event inspired men and women from five countries, nine Canadian provinces and 13 US states to become involved in conquering cancer in a bold way.

In its first year, The Ride to Conquer Cancer emerged as Canada’s largest cycling fundraising event. In 2009, it expanded to include three more of Canada’s most appealing locations: Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. These events will all take place later this summer.

Money raised through The Ride to Conquer Cancer means that The Princess Margaret can allocate crucial funds in three key areas: people, programs and platforms. As 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer each week, the work of Princess Margaret personnel is critical.

“Funds from the 2008 event have allowed us to ensure the sustainability of the leading and most promising cancer research initiatives at The Princess Margaret.,” says Dr. Jonathan Irish, Chief of Surgical Oncology at Princess Margaret Hospital. “Funds raised this year will be used to build on our leadership in GTx-Image Guided Surgery and Radiation, will assist in creating a world class chemotherapy daycare, will enhance our world-leading clinical trial program, and will help in discovering the ‘Achilles heel’ of each tumour.”

Although improvements have been made in the last 20 years to treat the over 200 types of cancer, many cancers are still often lethal with lung, pancreatic and ovarian presenting significant treatment challenges. In 2008 alone, there will be an estimated 159,900 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Canada and 72,700 deaths because of cancer.

“The generosity of the community this year has exceeded expectations,” says Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. “Our vision to conquer cancer in our lifetime is a critical one and we thank the donors, Riders and their families for their incredible support of our mission.”

After a moving Opening Ceremonies at the Direct Energy Centre at the Canadian National Exhibition, participants embark on the first 100 kilometres of the Ride. Tonight, they camp at Mohawk College to rest up for the final 100 kilometres on Sunday, which will take them on the final leg of their journey from Hamilton to Niagara Falls. Family, friends and supporters are invited to greet and cheer on the Riders as they make their way to the finish line.

Swiss Chalet is the presenting sponsor for this second-year event. Other official event sponsors and suppliers include CTV, The Globe and Mail, Q107, 102.1 The Edge, AM640, Via Rail, Louis Garneau, Steamwhistle, IBM, Sobeys and East Dell Estates.

Register today for the 2010 Ride to Conquer Cancer event. Some exciting innovations have been made to the 2010 Ride. First, if you know you can’t ride on June 12-13, 2010 but want to raise money for The Princess Margaret, you can still be a part of the event by doing it online, thanks to our new Virtual Rider Program! Or, if you want to challenge yourself with a longer route, we’ve added a 200-mile Double Century, while still offering the 200km Double Century route that has sold out the past two years. Both routes will share the same Start Line, Camp and Finish Line at Niagara Falls. For more information on all of these changes, please visit www.conquercancer.ca or phone 416.815-RIDE (7433).
